JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ- PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: “Sinatra & Friends”! Hi Jim: I wanted to make you aware of an excellent 4 hour 45 minute retrospective on Sinatra that our friend Wink Martindale has produced. It’s titled “Sinatra & Friends – Remembering An American Legend”, a perfect tribute to “The Voice”. And just in time for Sinatra’s Centennial/100th birthday Saturday, December 12th. Wink is making the show available to radio stations for $250.00. I’m sending a separate document listing words and music. The story is told in segments that run roughly 15 minutes each. And is not chronological. I’ll ask Wink to send you the show via Hightail so you can hear it for yourself. FYI – Wink tells me some stations are airing the show in segments…. mixed with their regular programming. Wink will be happy to produce personalized promos for each station. I hope you’ll give this a mention in your Jim Rose Remembers Radio feature column. Thanks, and an advance HAPPY THANKSGIVING! DAVID FAULKNER [KTNS-1600 Plano/KFJZ-870 Ft. Worth] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Tony Williams. Jim, Yesterday I heard that our friend Tony Williams passed away on October 24th. I know that you guys kept in touch and you often included emails from Tony in your newsletter. He will be missed. I became friends with Tony first through the old radio discussion board and later by way of facebook. Our conversations on FB often became threads of 50 to 75 comments that were mostly he and I bantering back and forth about radio, religion, politics, whatever the topic of the day was. Several times I said that he and I should’ve had a team show. That was a comment that he would always “like.” Maybe in the next life. Tony always had my back and yours. May he rest in peace. Take Care, David Faulkner
TRIVIA ANSWER: On November 4, 1916 David Sarnoff proposes a radio music box for radio reception. A 1916 Sarnoff memo mentions a radio music box scheme: I have in mind a plan of development which would make radio a ‘household utility’ in the same sense as the piano or phonograph. The idea is to bring music into the house by wireless. The ‘Radio Music Box’ can be supplied with amplifying tubes and a loud speaking telephone, all of which can be neatly mounted in one box.
DAVID HOUSE (Ft. Worth-North Richland Hills, TX) Subject: History of the car radio. Hi, Jim. Hope all is well. You probably know all this, but I thought I’d forward it to you. And what’s with all this “Bull” stuff? Why not celebrate Southern roots with something like “The Sty.” David House; Freelance Writer; Member: SPJ, Online News Association
JOHN WALTON [Walton & Johnson Show] (Houston-Brookshire, TX) Subject: Johnny Shannon. I will send you a rundown on the state of the business…little guy vs the clusters… Johnny and I would see each other every day at shift change…I believe it was 1979-1980. KTSA was #1 in San Antonio from the crappiest studios in the world. John Walton

The Music City Ghost [File #83] 2015: I recently spoke to a tourist visiting Nashville for the first time and he was telling me he saved up all his life to make his dream vacation come true. Part of that dream was to attend the Grand Ole Opry. He went on to say he checked the Opry Line up of singers scheduled and he didn’t know one of the artists listed. He showed me his program and these were the names it featured:
Grand Ole Opry Lineup: Jonathan Jackson, Annie Moses Band, Secret Sisters, Seth Alley, Keith Anderson, and more to be added
I told him don’t feel bad I never heard of most of theses artists either. To say the gentleman who appeared to be my age was disappointed is an understatement. I am not sure who he expected to see at the Grand Ole Opry but it certainly wasn’t these artists. When I think of the Grand Ole Opry that I listened to as a child on the radio, I think of Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb, Bill Monroe and a whole list of others who have passed on. No one lives forever but those pioneers of the Opry will be remembered forever. I can’t help but wonder how many of the new Country Stars will be remembered even 5 years from now.

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, Mark 10:43
Two more questions you should constantly ask yourself are: 1) Am I willing to serve others? You say you want to be a leader? Why? Until you answer that question with the right motives, God won’t promote you. Sometimes we just want to be in control. Other times we don’t want to pay the price for success. We just want the perks that come with it: a corner office, a higher salary, a respected title, and the admiration of others. Leadership puts you in a position to take care of your own needs first—to set yourself up—before helping others. That’s always a temptation and it’s always wrong! You must genuinely care about people and help them to reach their potential. When you do that you’re honoring God and He will honor you. 2) Am I doing what I’m called to do? ‘We have different gifts, according to the grace given us’ (Romans 12:6). Samuel Johnson said, ‘Almost every man wastes part of his life in attempts to display qualities which he does not possess…and gain applause which he cannot keep.’ If you’re harboring a mental image of the qualities talented people are supposed to have and you don’t possess, you’ll have a hard time finding your true strengths. Henry Ford remarked, ‘The question, ‘‘Who ought to be the boss?’’ is like asking, ‘‘Who ought to be the tenor in the quartet?’’ Obviously, the man who can sing tenor.’ To succeed in life, you must know what God gifted you to do.
Heavenly Father, help me ask the hard questions and answer honestly. Help me see that I always am to be one that does not see myself as better than others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
