The bill is intended to protect children from harmful online content, concerns have been raised over the broad terms of the draft online regulation policy. For example, the FPB has said it wanted all internet material to be classified in South Africa, according to a government gazette released in March 2015 which outlined contents of the proposed online regulation policy.
“All online material will need to be classified, in much the same way as films are currently classified. Online pornographic material will be classified as such,” the DA’s Gavin Davis told Fin24.
“The policy appears to apply to any person who uploads online content, be it via Facebook, Instagram, a blog, or any other online platform. This opens the door for the state to impinge on citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and to impart information,” Davis explained.
Davis further said that if the bill is “based on the draft online regulation policy released earlier this year, it will certainly impact on freedom of expression”.
“According to clause 7.4 of the policy, the Film and Publications Board has the power to have any content deemed ‘potentially harmful and disturbing to children’ taken down.
“The broadness of these terms gives the government significant latitude to proscribe content that does not fit in with the governing party’s political agenda and worldview,” said Davis.
“When read with the Film and Publications Act, the policy will empower the board to ban – by way of an ‘XX’ classification – any online content that is ‘degrading’ or ‘promotes harmful behaviour’. – Part of NEWS 24 article
Internet censorship is the control or suppression of what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the Internet. It may be carried out by governments or by private organizations at the behest of government, regulators, or on their own initiative – Wikipedia
A note for all Facebook fans, don’t think that you will have the use of Facebook as you know it today, once Internet censorship is implemented. Facebook as you know it will be gone, and so perhaps you too, if you mention anything that you should not, and you know you are already doing that anyway, so you will be censored or arrested maybe even persecuted, who knows ? So don’t say you have not been warned.

BILL CONWAY [Former PD/OM Entercom KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) Subject: Lynn Anderson. Hi Jim, I saw the Lynn Anderson obit. Too soon for a real talent. Did you know she was once married to a radio station owner? My first PD gig was at KAOK in Lake Charles in the 70s. Harold “Spook” Stream was a local rich guy (still is) and started his own station NOVA 104 to play the kind of rock he wanted to hear. One of my North Texas State classmates, Otis Tomerlin known professionally as Tommy Otis, was running it. Lynn Anderson was the girlfriend of and later wife of Spook. I think they bent the format enough to play her records. Bill Conway=

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: John Cook. Hi Jim and Suzie!!! Since our “world” is a small one it’s a good chance there’s less than “two degrees separation” from any one of us. I worked with John back in the late 90’s and 2K when we were both working for Infinity/CBS or whoever we were that week HAHA. John has been around the block a few times, he worked at KISS in Dallas, LA and of course Philadelphia. I should find out in a day or two where he’s at these days since I sent the “friend” request on Facebook. I also mentioned that Jack wanted to get in touch. If that doesn’t work I’ll check with my good friend Reid Reker as he keeps in touch with the “crew”. Jay Walker

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Quiz Kids Memories. Hey Jim, your Quiz Kids trivia question brought back some memories. My first radio job in 1965 was working weekends at the Houston classical station KLEF FM. One of the full timers there was the afternoon guy Gerard Darrow, who was one of the original Radio Quiz Kids, recruited in 1940 at the age of seven. Darrow had a sky high IQ and knew a lot about a lot of things, especially science, art and classical music. Sadly, he grew up to be extremely neurotic as an adult. He told me he had to quit some very good radio jobs in New York and San Francisco because those stations were what he called “monster factories” that caused him to have several nervous breakdowns. I really enjoyed being around him because he was a very funny guy and I learned a lot from him. I lost track of him when I moved on from KLEF to my first full time job at KMSC FM in Nassau Bay. Sadly, Gerard ended up living on welfare because nobody would hire him. He died penniless in 1980 at the age of 47. So sad. Jim Bell, retired in Lufkin.
OSCAR WILDE (October 16, 1854 – November 30, 1900) I am completely penniless, and absolutely homeless. Yet there are worse things in the world than that.

We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. Hebrews 2:1
The Bible says, ‘We must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away…How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?’ (vv. 1 & 3). Note the words ‘drift’ and ‘neglect’. Those words should set off alarm bells! Samson’s decline was so gradual that he didn’t even realize it was happening. Like flipping a switch, he’d become used to drawing on the power of God and overcoming every enemy and obstacle. But sin and self-indulgence became his undoing. When Delilah said, “‘The Philistines are upon you, Samson!”…he awoke from his sleep, and said, “I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him. Then the Philistines took him’ (Judges 16:20-21). When you neglect God you begin to ‘drift away’. Your prayers aren’t as effective. You’re no longer a godly influence on those around you. You slip back into old habit patterns. You refuse to forgive those who’ve offended you. You fail to make amends to those you’ve hurt. You start doing what’s expedient and comfortable instead of what’s right. You harbor attitudes of fear and resentment. You feed your old nature and neglect your new one. These are all signs that you need a spiritual checkup. Ask God today to highlight those attitudes, activities and relationships that need to be dealt with and start weeding them out. The good news is that when you’re obedient to God’s Word and the Spirit’s leading, you regain your spiritual vitality and God can use you more effectively.
