JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: John Cook. Jim: Do you know the whereabouts of John Cook, son of the late Jay Cook? I remember that when Jay was still alive, John was PD of a station in Dallas, but I haven’t heard anything about him in recent years. Jay was a dear friend for many years…we worked together twice at WHBQ, going back to 1961. When I was PD, in 1965, I hired him back to do afternoon drive, and he got offered a midday show at WFIL, went up there, became pd shortly, then became one of the best anywhere to conduct national radio seminars. He even became President of Gannett Radio. We stayed in very close touch up to just 2 days before he died. He was one of the very few radio people who was totally honest and forthright, and loved and respected by all who knew him. Pls let me know if you know anything about John. I only knew him as a baby before the family moved to Philadelphia. I’d like to call him sometime. Thanks much, Jack Parnell WHBQ-Memphis in the late 50s thru the 60s.WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? MIKE BRAUN (KWTX-AM/FM 1975-79) (Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Obits. Jim, I’m sending information about the passing of two individuals associated with broadcasting. Perhaps some of your readers may have known or worked with them. According to her obituary in the Star-Telegram, June 21, Fort Worth-native Ann Barham Pugh was known to Fort Worth audiences as “Ann Alden” of “The Ann Alden Show,” her self-produced daytime TV show on WBAP-TV, Channel 5 (now KXAS-TV). She participated in WBAP-TV’s first colorcast in the late 1950s. Ann was 91, and passed away April 18 in Virginia. According to his obituary in the Star-Telegram, July 22, Freeport, Illinois-native Edward “Rick” Richter began his radio career in 1951 at WRAC (1460) in Racine, Wis. He also worked at WRRR (1330) and WROK (1440) Rockford, Ill.; WLBK (1360), DeKalb, Ill; and WELL-FM, Freeport, Ill. During his radio career, he was a newscaster, sportscaster, DJ, talk show host, copywriter, salesman and station manager. He moved to Arlington, Texas in 1999. He passed away July 20 at the age of 94. Publishing these announcements in your newsletter will help honor their lives and accomplishments. Mike Braun, Fort Worth (KWTX-AM/FM, Waco, 1975-1979)

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: colorization. When Ted Turner was colorizing black-and-white films, Orson Welles once said to another director, Henry Jaglom, “Make me one promise: Keep Ted Turner and his crayons away from my pictures.” I did not say it. Welles said it, and I agree. His films could never be touched anyway by Turner since the rights belong to two people, his daughter, Beatrice, and Oja Kodar, his girlfriend. Both are highly protective of his films. Tony

TRIVIA ANSWER: Wolfman Jack’s first broadcast on WNBC-660 in New York City is on August 6, 1973. This is the same month of American Graffiti’s debut. WNBC-660 pits Wolfman Jack up against his arch rival Cousin Brucie (Bruce Morrow) on WABC-770. After less than a year, Wolfman Jack high tails it back to California to work on his syndicated radio show. WNBC-660 snatches Cousin Brucie away from WABC-770.
