ESPN RADIO REPLACES THE HERD WITH A DUO When ESPN Radio bids farewell to nationally syndicated morning host Colin Cowherd, who escapes to Fox for a cool $6M, they have to make quick a decision for a full-time replacement on ESPN-owned and affiliate Radio stations. ESPN Radio opts to rotate different fill-in programs each week for at least the next couple of weeks. ESPN’s own Waddle & Silvy on WMVP-1000 Chicago pads one of those fill-in weeks – maybe more. Only The Shadow knows for sure.

KEN DOWE [Former CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Sam (Hale). Jim, Sad news about a friend. Ken
JOHN LONG [GA Radio Hall of Fame founded in 2007 by Sam Hale and John Long] (St Marys, GA) Sam Hale is in hospice. Looks like his long battle is almost over. Do you have Ken Dowe’s email address by any chance. The one I have is no longer valid. Ken worked with Sam at WQXI in Atlanta in the 60’s. I want to let him know about Sam. — John Long; President The Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame
CLAUDE HALL [Ex writer Billboard Vox Jox culumn] (Las Vegas, NV) Hate to see Sam go. Good man. — Claude
JOHN LONG [PD WHBQ Memphis, PD KULF Houston] (St Marys, GA) Hi Ken Glad Claude was able to relay the message. Sam’s been having heart problems for a long time and that led to other complications. He has been in and out of the hospital over the past year with fluid on his longs caused by congestive heart failure. This time the doctors finally told the family there was nothing more that could be done. He was a good friend and of course co founder of the GRHoF. The organization has grown so large since you came to the Quixie in the 60’s reunion in 2007. We now have a museum and at least half of our mission is collecting and preserving Georgia radio memorabilia and chronicling its history. I’ll let you know if anything changes. Love to see you in Atlanta again. jl
KEN DOWE [Former Ken & Granny Emma #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Hey, John… Thanks for letting me know, John. I am really sorry. Please tell Carolyn she and Sam are in our prayers. I’ve kept up with all the successes since you guys began the Georgia Hall of Fame. What a wonderfully professional operation you have created in Georgia. Regrettably, the situation in Texas has not been up to your specs, and that is sad. You guys should do a “How To” clinic for building any Hall of Fame operation. Please do keep me advised about Sam, John. And, my very best wishes for the continued success of the Georgia Hall of Fame that Sam, you, and so many of my Georgia Radio friends built from talent and their love for a sparkling profession. Best always, Your OLDE friend, Ken

Kendall came into the living room to turn the TV I was watching to FOX for a performance by the group All For One…we gave them their first big break by playing the song “I Swear” so much they became a regional hit group at the time…and it all started in Joplin…we booked them twice into the convention hall in Joplin…good kids (not kids anymore)…looks like they are doing well…good for them. They’d hang out at the station all day on the days they performed…chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)
TRIVIA ANSWER: In December 1964, the Righteous Brothers You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ dominates our radios. In fact, this song wears so well that it is the most played radio song with over 8 million in the U.S. alone. Phil Spector is the musical genius who produces the Righteous Brothers huge hit record with then unknown Sonny & Cher as back-up singers. Next is The Beatles’ Yesterday (1965) with at least seven million in the U.S. alone, plus many more in the rest of the world.
JAY WEAVER [KCUL-1540/KBUY-1540/KPCN-730] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Jim – It’s the least any of us should be able to do for what you do for us. I look forward every week, twice a week, to your column for “all the news that is the news.” I have learned allot from you and “Thank You!” for what you do! I have read about folks that I have wondered about for years and found some I knew years ago! It helps me “stay” in radio! It is great!
