ESPN RADIO REPLACES THE HERD WITH A DUO When ESPN Radio bids farewell to nationally syndicated morning host Colin Cowherd, who escapes to Fox for a cool $6M, they have to make quick a decision for a full-time replacement on ESPN-owned and affiliate Radio stations. ESPN Radio opts to rotate different fill-in programs each week for at least the next couple of weeks. ESPN’s own Waddle & Silvy on WMVP-1000 Chicago pads one of those fill-in weeks – maybe more. KEN DOWE [Former CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Sam (Hale). Jim, Sad news about a friend. Ken

JOHN LONG [GA Radio Hall of Fame founded in 2007 by Sam Hale and John Long] (St Marys, GA) Sam Hale is in hospice. Looks like his long battle is almost over. Do you have Ken Dowe’s email address by any chance. The one I have is no longer valid. Ken worked with Sam at WQXI in Atlanta in the 60’s. I want to let him know about Sam. — John Long; President The Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame

CLAUDE HALL [Ex writer Billboard Vox Jox culumn] (Las Vegas, NV) Hate to see Sam go. Good man. — Claude

JOHN LONG [PD WHBQ Memphis, PD KULF Houston] (St Marys, GA) Hi Ken Glad Claude was able to relay the message. Sam’s been having heart problems for a long time and that led to other complications. He has been in and out of the hospital over the past year with fluid on his longs caused by congestive heart failure. This time the doctors finally told the family there was nothing more that could be done. He was a good friend and of course co founder of the GRHoF. The organization has grown so large since you came to the Quixie in the 60’s reunion in 2007. We now have a museum and at least half of our mission is collecting and preserving Georgia radio memorabilia and chronicling its history. I’ll let you know if anything changes. Love to see you in Atlanta again. jl

KEN DOWE [Former Ken & Granny Emma #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Hey, John… Thanks for letting me know, John. I am really sorry. Please tell Carolyn she and Sam are in our prayers. I’ve kept up with all the successes since you guys began the Georgia Hall of Fame. What a wonderfully professional operation you have created in Georgia. Regrettably, the situation in Texas has not been up to your specs, and that is sad. You guys should do a “How To” clinic for building any Hall of Fame operation. Please do keep me advised about Sam, John. And, my very best wishes for the continued success of the Georgia Hall of Fame that Sam, you, and so many of my Georgia Radio friends built from talent and their love for a sparkling profession. Best always, Your OLDE friend, Ken

Kendall came into the living room to turn the TV I was watching to FOX for a performance by the group All For One…we gave them their first big break by playing the song “I Swear” so much they became a regional hit group at the time…and it all started in Joplin…we booked them twice into the convention hall in Joplin…good kids (not kids anymore)…looks like they are doing well…good for them. They’d hang out at the station all day on the days they performed…chuck (

TRIVIA ANSWER: In December 1964, the Righteous Brothers You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ dominates our radios. In fact, this song wears so well that it is the most played radio song with over 8 million in the U.S. alone. Phil Spector is the musical genius who produces the Righteous Brothers huge hit record with then unknown Sonny & Cher as back-up singers. Next is The Beatles’ Yesterday (1965) with at least seven million in the U.S. alone, plus many more in the rest of the world.

JAY WEAVER [KCUL-1540/KBUY-1540/KPCN-730] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Jim – It’s the least any of us should be able to do for what you do for us. I look forward every week, twice a week, to your column for “all the news that is the news.” I have learned allot from you and “Thank You!” for what you do! I have read about folks that I have wondered about for years and found some I knew years ago! It helps me “stay” in radio! It is great! GARRISON KEILLOR (August 7, 1942 – p) Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

Rhon’s Early Morning Inspiration For Friday

RhonsInspirationDaily2014Rhonnie Scheuerman’s Friday Morning Inspiration For All In Need Of Some

After reading BRIAN DOLYE’S article in today’s “DAILY GUIDPOSTS”,

I felt the timing was perfect to send it out to my many music  friends , hope it helps you. Rhon Brian Doyle is the editor of Portland magazine  at the University of Portland in Oregon.  He is the author of many books. Readers around the world are absorbed by his strange headlong  spiritual  essays.

Brian Doyle

I have not, as yet been to every country on this round and amazing rock.  But I have been to other continents and to another hemisphere, and I have seen new stars and birds and trees, and I have tried to swim in various other languages and gaped at the glories and machinations of other tribes and nations, and I feel informed  and experienced and seasoned enough now to be able to say this: I do not think we sing the miracle and joy of being Americans  enough.

We complain and argue and accuse and debate and snarl and roar and insult, and there are endless good reasons for our intemperate burble . But  we ought not to forget we are free to worship as we please, free to gather and shout and caper, free to call a spade a spade.  We take this for granted.  We forget the joy of the American idea.  We forget that even as we make endless mistakes, we have done brave and glorious things like outlaw selling Americans of other colors and saving millions of people from imperial slavery and facing down every squirming sort  of bully there is.

There NEVER was an idea like America before to live free, and it’s still a wild and courageous idea that’s not dead yet.  And there are seeds of great peace and creativity and justice  and mercy in the American idea, seeds that might flower in other forms all over this round and amazing rock if we drop  and quash our squabbles.  Even as I gnash my teeth at our violence and greed and xenophobia  ,  I take pride in who we are, who  we might still be.  And bigger than mere pride is joy that we are a country yet of the most amazing possibility ever.  What a gift.  What sweet work.

Dear Lord, as if it wasn’t enough that I was born into this miraculous world, You also made me an American.  Grant me the courage  and creativity to help my country put violence and greed out of business, and show the world that  we still can be…Brian

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
