OK NEWS PRO HAS UNEXPECTED DESTINY KFOR TV NBC CH 4 Oklahoma City, OK Sports Director Bob Barry, Jr. killed on Saturday, June 20, 2015 when a car makes an illegal U-turn and crashes into his motor scooter not far from his home. Apparently, the driver of the vehicle 26 year old Gustavo Gutierrez-Castillo who has no driver’s license or auto insurance is in our country illegally because he possesses only a Mexican ID. Barry who wears no helmet is pronounced dead at OU Trauma Center.
MSNBC STAFF STILL FUMES OVER WILLIAMS Former NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams demotion to MSNBC has him stepping out of the fire into the flame because many MSNBC staffers are still furious with him. According to the NY Post, MSNBC staffers do not forget Brian’s two-part September 2012 scathing report he arrogantly aired on his short-lived “Rock Center” about “corrosive” cable news blowhards at MSNBC, Fox News and CNN. There is nothing cheaper than a bunch of talking heads.
JUST WHO IS BEHIND THE SCENES? Many times in today’s broadcast consolidation, interns or new hires are not really up to snuff on subject matter. We believe that WMAQ TV NBC CH 5 Chicago, IL needs sports-minded editors who spot mistakes before they go out on air. This week, in a news story about the St. Louis Cardinals MLB allegedly hacking into the Houston Astros’ player personnel database, NBC 5 uses a graphic of the wrong Cardinals team. They use the Arizona Cardinals NFL team logo, not the MLB team. Oops.

PHIL ROBBINS [KEEZ FM, KVIC FM, KAYC-1450, KZEU FM, KKBH FM, KNAL FM] (Victoria, TX) Hi Jim, As I recall I ran across JRRR a few years back while searching something about radio. I remembered your name from the great days of radio. I enjoyed the website and bookmarked your site. I’m been living in Victoria, TX since 1971. Moved down here from my hometown San Antonio. Yes I was in radio 21 yrs. I got hooked on radio in late 1964. My sister won a Beatles album from KONO (860) and was going downtown to pick it up. I tagged along just for something to do. As we waited in the lobby I overheard the receptionist tell another small group of people that someone would be out to take them on the tour. My ears perked up and I asked if we could go too? We did, and little did I know that this would eventually turn out to be what I call a fantastic career. Phil Robbins

JAY WALKER [KJKK FM 100.3/KTSA-550 KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: On the first LP debut… Hi Jim I got a chuckle out of your trivia question in the last newsletter about the debut of LP records and how they could hold 23 minutes of material as opposed to the 78’s 2 or 3 minutes. Ronco and K-Tel managed to cram 30 minutes or more per side with all the heavy compression and super light microscopic cutting depth they used. Great old compilations but boy were they easy to cue-burn HAHA… You and Suzie stay healthy!!! Jay Walker-McKinney Texas

TRIVIA ANSWER: On June 18, 1961, after a nine-year run, CBS Radio airs the final episode of Gunsmokestarring William Conrad as the voice of Marshal Matt Dillon. Gunsmoke‘s supporting cast includes Howard McNear as Doc Charles Adams, Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell and Parley Baer as Dillon’s assistant Chester Proudfoot.
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: News on the Radio. I find that I want the facts so I can make my own decisions. Why do I need others to tell me what the PUTOS has just said if I heard the speech? Also I could care less about the way a person dresses, as long as it looks acceptable. When Newscasts deal with entertainment than real news. Do I really want to see Jim Carrey doing News? Though I may start thinking about somethings in a different way. Also for broadcasters I dislike when the report a story as Pleasant Grove when it is Buckner Terrace, Piedmont, Urbandale. I told a reporter his reporting was wrong that a shooting on Lawn view and Military was Parkdale not Pleasant Grove. The reporter goes they don’t know where Parkdale is. I am thinking they can learn besides if this is wrong in your story what about other facts and stories. [KC5RAI]

Start StrategizingThen David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. 1 Chronicles 28:11 King David came up with a plan for building the temple, but his son Solomon actually built it. Question: Do you have a strategy for fulfilling your dream? Are you working on it? Or are you waiting for someone like a fairy godmother to come along and bail you out? The only thing worse than having no dream is having one without a plan to make it a reality. A strategy gives you energy, direction and focus. A study was conducted on how infrequently people develop strategies for achieving their dreams. Here’s what it revealed: 26% focus on specific, tangible targets for what they want in life; 19% set goals aligned with their purpose, mission, and passion; 15% write down their goals in specific measurable detail; 12% maintain a clearly defined goal for every major interest and life role; 12% identify related daily, weekly and long-term goals with deadlines. Only 7% take daily action toward the attainment of at least one goal. Here’s a comment from the study’s authors: ‘Americans, once again, get an ‘F’ in this critical area of their performance. Simply put, they fail to consistently take the actions necessary to move their dreams and visions out of their hearts and heads and into their lives’. Dreams don’t come true because you ‘wish upon a star’. They come true because you seek God for direction, put them down on paper with specific actions and timelines, become accountable to yourself—and if you’re wise, to somebody else too. So the word for you today is, ‘Stop stargazing and start strategizing’.
