J.K. Coltrain Celebrates 30 Years as a Country Artist

Lake on FireJ.K. Coltrain Celebrates 30 Years as a Country Artist

J.K. recently marked his 30 year anniversary as a recording artist. He was thrilled that he would be releasing a version of his greatest hits CD called 30 Years of Coltrain in March 2015. J.K.’s very first single which charted pretty well for him back in 1986 called ‘The Way I Feel Tonight’ was his first big hit. It was originally on vinyl and remastered for his special “30 Year Anniversary” CD release.

JK Coltrain early Years

J.K. Coltrain was born in Columbus, Ohio. He spent his early childhood days between there and West Virginia where his parents operated a small Mom & Pop grocery store. His Dad also was an excellent auto mechanic and in fact owned a number of repair shops over the years and was a weekend stock car racer. That’s one reason why J.K. is a Nascar fanatic to this day

J.K. grew up surrounded by music & musicians. His cousin, Buddy Starcher was a professional recording artist on Columbia Records and was a regular performer on the then popular Midwestern & Louisiana Hayrides. He also introduced the late Keith Whitley who first appeared on Buddys weekly radio show in Charleston, West Virginia when he was 8 years old. J.K. made his own first appearance on radio at age 12 and first TV appearance at age 14.

His Uncle & Grandpa performed together at churches throughout the South. That’s where J.K. made his first appearance singing in church at the ripe old age of 11. His first professional job was at age 14 when he began singing with The Pleasant Hill Quartet. A well-known gospel group at the time.

Of course in his teens he had to try his hand in high school dance bands like Fire n’ Ice and The Four Aces but by age 20 he had returned to his first love country music. At that time J.K. helped form a 7 piece country rock group called ‘The Southern Express’. They garnered a great deal of regional success and opened for many popular groups at that time such as Pure Prairie League, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Poco & The Marshall Tucker Band.

In 1983 he left The Southern Express to pursue a solo career as his heart was with more traditional country music. He appeared to be taking the music business by storm as he was often the featured artist on Ernest Tubbs Midnite Jamboree and many popular Nashville nightclubs and was dubbed The Star of Tomorrow by Country Music News.

“I have been told that I sound like Don Williams, Vern Gosdin, Ed Bruce, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and more but I try my best to maintain a style of my own and just be myself ” J.K.Coltrain

He first cracked the country music charts in 1987 with a self-penned song, West Virginia You’re Still My Home on the Studio 7 label. Since then he had enjoyed a number of chart successes including being shown in the Top 40 in Europe for 41 straight weeks. He also has made many appearances on radio & TV including The Nashville Showcase, The Midnight Jamboree, Nashville On Stage, The Jerry Lewis Telethon & Stars of Tomorrow Show. J.K. has toured worldwide and worked with some of the greatest names in country music including Jerry Reed, Loretta Lynn, The Bellamy Brothers, Conway Twitty, Buck Owens, George Jones, Tammy Wynette & Jerry Lee Lewis to name just a few.

In addition to still recording and performing on his own J.K. is now helping the new up & coming young artists serving as the President of Colt Records Nashville, Chairman of The Traditional Country Opry and hosting The Country Star Showcases.

J.K. Coltrain was inducted into The Traditional Country Hall of Fame in 2006 and was awarded both Album of The Year & Entertainer of The Year by The Texas CMA in 2009.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Jim: Very interesting! According to my niece in Dallas, there’s nothing more interesting than genealogy. She even teaches nationally on how to find who did what to and with whom way back when. Interesting too that your ancestors are from England; some of mine are, but most are from Ireland. I have my demo on a website in London; voiceovers.co.uk, and I got an email from a Sara Parnell, who lives in London, is an actress, and she was noticing that at that time she and I had the same American talent agent in Atlanta. I’ve visited her website a few times, and she’s a very good voiceover, as well as actress.

BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360, KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) Jim, I was on the board of Texas AP broadcasters, back then, as well. sadly, I ended up following my ex wife to Tennessee to be near my daughter (which was a very bad move). Knoxville radio sucked back then, it sucks now – just worse. I did some news, flew traffic watch, got tired of it all. A buddy of mine bought a station outside of Knoxville, he and I ran it for a number of years…and – quite frankly – I just got burned out on radio. So there it is in a semi-nutshell. Ben Harold

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Lee Baby. Not his best aircheck, but … he was creative. When I was in the hospital in 2006, Lee called me. I really did not feel like talking, but he said, “Man, this is a one-in-a-lifetime offer, no money-back guarantees.” He could always make me laugh. Lee hated working with board ops. He preferred to work his own board. Ironically, on this tape, he says goodbye to his board op who was leaving KCBQ in San Diego. TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 13, 1989 the Friday the 13th virus infects hundreds of IBM computers throughout Great Britain that wipes out program files and causes tremendous mayhem when large-scale computer viruses are a new threat.

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Older Brains are full of too much info to remember. I keep thinking about the lyrics to “My boyfriends back,”, American Bandstand, 3 Assassinations, “I am not a crook”, “The Eagle has landed”, Linda Ronstadt barefoot, “It’s 10:22 with Donnie”, Hendrix at Woodstock, Bill Graham making me pay to see one of my acts at the Fillmore, Tina Turner saying, “Don Sundeen do you think I have pretty legs?” Getting caught between Willie Mitchell and Al Green, the birth of my two wonderful children, the first date with my beautiful wife Poppy, (wings and beer), the deaths of my parents and so many friends including my partner Lee, the friends who are there when you’re up and when you’re down, rocking on the radio in Bermuda, the kindness of so many people along the way, my many friendships that go back to High School, college and the USAF, and a million more things many of which I no longer remember…in fact, why am I in the kitchen? How about you, memory slipping?

HEDLEY LAMARR [Blazing Saddles – 1974] My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

South African Zombie Apocalypse to be at Smallville Comics

Nothing to do this weekend? Smallville Comics in Alberton, South Africa is celebrating a grand re-opening and will be hosting, author of a new Zombie book Journal of a South African Zombie Apocalypse as part of their ‘Walk-In Dead’ event. Herrmann will appear on Sunday 1st of March, from 11:00 to sign copies of his local post-apocalyptic thriller and chat all things zombie.  All Comic Book and Zombies Fans are invited to the grand opening for a real pop culture experience.

Zombies are a fascinating subject matter. Post-apocalyptic tales are often less about zombies and more about the survivors. They are a reflection of ourselves and our fears, often giving us food for thought on what we would do to survive. Plus, zombies are just plain cool,’ says Hermann of his second novel. To celebrate the kick-off of the new store, there will be a marathon viewing of The Walking Dead Season 5 from episodes 9-11 as an intro to Smallville comic’s weekly The Walk-in Dead event. There’s no cover charge for these events and we are looking forward to seeing all our zombie fans at Smallville Comics’ new store.

Told from the perspective of sixteen-year-old Kon, Journal of a South African Zombie Apocalypse is a coming of age story in a very different South Africa, and chronicles one family’s fight for survival against the walking dead. Books will be on sale for R120 and fans have the opportunity to have their copy signed by the author.

Journal of a South African Zombie Apocalypse is also available from Amazon, Kalahari, Porcupine Press and Loot as an e-book and hard copy. Also available in selected bookstores

Rhon’s Friday Inspiration Station Goes Worldwide

It’s Friday And It’s the Beginning of a New Weekend

Rest well and as always prepare for a new week with the Lord

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in Me

The more challenging your life circumstances, the more you need to affirm-and lean on-your confident trust in Me. During difficult times, your natural tendency is to rely heavily on your own understanding. However, your human understanding is not up to this task; it will fail you time and again.

You have every reason to be confident in Me. I am the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, and I am in charge of every aspect of your life. Because the world is in such a fallen condition, it may seem as if I’m not in control. I could end all suffering instantly-by destroying the earth and taking My children Home-but I am waiting to bring many sons and daughters to Glory.

So take heart as you live in this broken world, believing that My eternal purposes are being worked out through your difficulties. Your troubles are part of My majestic Master Plan, and they are achieving an eternal Glory that far outweighs them all!

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. -Proverbs 3:5 amp

It was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. -Hebrews 2:10 nkjv

“Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. -2 Corinthians 4:17”

He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
