JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Carl Perkins. I of course knew Carl too. The day he got back from his hospital stay from the accident, a good friend and I (we were both still in high school), drove over to Jackson to visit Carl and welcome him home. He lived in a housing project over in Jackson at the time. I was at WHBQ back when the Drake-Chenault people were our consultants and they came up with the idea for “The History of Rock ‘n Roll”, and because I knew Carl well, they asked me to get an interview with him. I did of course and it was the one used on all the Drake stations, and I believe it was used on the show that ended up being done for syndication. Jack

BILL GARDNER [ex KVIL Dallas, K-101 FM San Francisco & WFYR FM Chicago] (Las Vegas, NV) Subject: Whoops? Hi Jim Rose… Got an update to your trivia question about the “first Beatle tune” to reach the U.S. charts. First, I really enjoy JRRR, and read every issue. Since amazingly our paths have never crossed, and we don’t know one another, I spent over forty years on stations like KVIL Dallas, K-101 FM San Francisco, WFYR-FM Chicago, and others including nine years as morning guy until 2008 at Phoenix AZ’s KOOL 94.5, “Jill FM” L.A., and even a Billboard Air Personality of the Year trophy on my mantle. Not bragging, just an introduction. For a rare time, I thought I knew a JRRR trivia, the “first Beatle tune to reach the U.S. charts.” In 1963, Del Shannon and others toured Europe, and the Beatles were among the opening acts, performing their British hit, “From Me To You.” Shannon enjoyed their songs, and recorded a version of “From Me To You.” It reached #77 on the Billboard chart in June of 1963. Believe it or not, as a young kid, I actually had a copy. So technically, your trivia answer was correct, but actually “From Me To You” was the first Beatle song to reach the U.S. charts. I remember mentioning this little known fact a couple times on my morning radio show at KOOL 94.5 Phoenix, and it’s probably why it popped into my head when I saw your trivia question this week. Yep. I’m still a JRRR fan, but wanted to drop you this quick note and qualifier! Bill Gardner; Las Vegas, NV
THE BEATLES ‘FROM ME TO YOU’ According to Billboard magazine and to Joel Whitburn, the first Beatles single to land on Billboard’s Hot 100 record chart is I Want to Hold Your Hand on January, 16, 1964 at #45 on Capitol records. It is #1 for 7 weeks. The Beatles’ tune From Me to You on Vee-Jay records, which is the flip side of Please Please Me, does not make it to Billboard’s Hot 100 until March 7, 1964 and peaks at #41. It remains on Billboard for 6 weeks. Originally, The Beatles From Me to You ‘Bubbles Under’ at #118 on Billboard on August 3, 1963 but it does not make Billboard’s Hot 100 until March 7, 1964 and peaks at #41. It is a track from the album Jolly What! The Beatles and Frank Ifield.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Bob worked for me in Cleveland a truly wonderful and caring human. RJ Bob Shannon has passed away. On November 8, 1980, while Bob Shannon was working his 3-to-7 pm shift at KHJ, the format changed from top-40 to country. The jingles proclaimed, “We all grew up to be cowboys.” Well…we didn’t really. Anyway, Shannon stayed at KHJ for two more years, then went to KLAC. He also jocked at KUTY, KWIZ, KFI and KRTH and at stations in Yuma, Phoenix, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Seattle and St. Louis. (Whew!) Shannon, born Robert Adams in St. Catherines, Ontario, died of a massive heart attack on January 26, 2015. He was 67.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In its early days, KVOO-1170 Tulsa, OK announcers have to include Philtower in their top-of-the-hour station breaks in order to pay the rent. The Philtower Building is a Tulsa, OK landmark at 427 South Boston. Philtower’s neo-gothic and art deco architecture building goes up in 1928.
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Marvin Gaye’s Isolated Vocal Track Will Leave You Stunned and Speechless. Absolutely amazing, Marvin was one of the best there ever was, and died way too young. Unlike many of his peers, he didn’t need echo or any other electronic assistance to enhance his natural vocal ability and pitch. He was a man of high principles and deep beliefs murdered by his father…that’s almost Shakespearean. www.purpleclover.com/life-reimagined/2883-marvin-gayes-isolated-vocal-track-will-leave-you-stunned-and-speechless/#.VLwU_gMAwBb.mailto
