“Liefling” first began as a movie, which was released by Hartiwood Films
Liefling the movie released in November 2010 took more than R13,7 million at the box office. Still the most successful Afrikaans movie to date, over 400,000 people went to see it in the cinema. After that came Jy Is My Liefling, the kykNET reality series that saw Liza Brönner win the hearts of the nation as the new Liefling, and then onto stage at the State Theatre Opera in 2013. The show sold out in four days’ after opening: A great testimony to audiences’ overwhelming response to this musical comedy. And now to add to its list of achievements, LIEFLING will be the first Afrikaans musical at the Teatro at Montecasino.
From 12 December to 4 January this musical follows the enduring recipe of ‘boy-meets-girl-loses-girl-but-gets-her-in-the-end’. It’s a love story between Liefling Marais (Liza Brönner) and Jan Ferreira (Bobby van Jaarsveld) and provides the background for a celebration of Afrikaans music and culture. Sometimes tongue-in-cheek and sometimes nostalgic, it pays tribute to old and new hits such as Spieëltjie, Kinders Van Die Wind, Voshaarnooi, Lang Maer Blonde Man, Ek Verlang Na Jou, and of course, Gé Korsten’s classic Liefling.
Simply put, LIEFLING captures all the family feel-good of the holiday season, and will leave you humming a happy tune for days.
