A Prayer for Lent

Father, through our observance of Lent, help us to understand the meaning of Your Son’s death

And resurrection, and teach us to reflect it in our lives.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You

And the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

The Big 98 WSIX “Party On The Plaza With Us” Nashville’s New Country

big 98The King of Country says goodbye to touring with The Cowboy Rides Away Tour. George Strait is coming to Nashville and we want to show him the respect he deserves. Stop by Bridgestone Plaza on March 21 starting at 5p and look for The BIG 98 tent. We’re partnering with Wrangler to hand out country blue cowboy hats and taking photos with our “stand-in” George. You can also get entered to win your way into our exclusive VIP After Party with Sheryl Crow at Swingin’ Doors. Come help us give it all we got that night to celebrate George’s last concert in Music City!

Out of all the new country singers to emerge in the early ’80s, George Strait stayed the closest to traditional country. Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn’t refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them for a new decade. In the process, he became one of the most popular and influential singers of the decade, sparking a wave of neo-traditionalist singers from Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam to Clint Black, Garth Brooks, and Alan Jackson.

TOP STAND UP COMEDIAN FALLS Tonight Show favorite whose brand of comedy becomes a staple for other standup comedians, like Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Reiser, dies at 78 on Saturday afternoon, March 15, 2014 in his home in New York City. Starting in the 1970s, comedian David Brenner’s standup routines become a favorite of Tonight Show host Johnny Carson. David’s 150-plus Tonight Show appearances turn the former documentary filmmaker into a hot comedian. Brenner stars in four HBO comedy specials. In 1987, David hosts his own syndicated talk show. Jeff Abraham, Brenner’s friend and publicist remembers: David was always there helping a bright young comedian, whether it is Richard Lewis, Freddie Prinze or Jimmie Walker, and he was still doing it until the very end.

IN A WORLD WHERE VOICE OVER ARTISTS DIE The two most well known voice artists of all time are no longer with us. Don LaFontaine, the man who popularizes the catch phrase In a world where…, is probably the most well known trailer voice-over artist dies on September 1, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. Another voice-over artist who possesses equal fame, Hal Douglas the gravelly Voice of God dies on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 89 in his home in Lovettsville, VA. We marvel at Hal’s earth shaking voice on movie trailers for Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Meet the Parents, Lethal Weapon. He also appears on camera in a movie trailer for comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s 2002 documentary Comedian. Hal’s survivors include wife Ruth, daughter Sarah, two sons, Jeremy and John and three grandchildren.

WHO WATCHES TERRORIST NEWS NETWORK AJAM? Where is the audience for a terrorist news cable TV like Al Jazeera America? The deep pockets of the Qatari royal family are AJAM’s meal ticket. The AJAM channel does not even attract half the total audience of its predecessor, Al Gore’s Current TV. From August 1, 2005 to August 20, 2013 Fat Albert’s left-leaning Current TV is a ratings bomb. He unloads it to Al Jazeera for $500 million. AJAM draws far fewer viewers than the failed cable TV channel it replaces, Al Gore’s Current TV. According to Nielsen figures, Al Jazeera America averages just 15,000 total viewers in prime-time since bowing in August (2013), with only 5,000 viewers in the target 25-to-54-year-old demographic.

Can’t take it much under 60 degrees, don’t like it much over 80! Thought I’d send an audio from the great Paul Harvey so think about. I was blown away!!! This was 47 years ago. April 3, 1965. An amazing prediction. Do you remember the famous ABC radio commentator Paul Harvey? Millions of Americans listened to his programs which were broadcast over 1,200 radio stations nationwide. When you listen to this, remember, the commentary was broadcast 47 years ago on April 3, 1965. It’s short…less than three minutes. You will be amazed. Click: http://stg.do/9LDc

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: John Cameron Swayze. Hey Jim, As you reported, John Cameron Swayze is remembered for doing Timex wristwatch commercials for at least 20 years. The commercials showed them putting those watches through all kinds of rough torture tests, and they all ended with Swayze saying “they take a licking and keep on ticking.” But do you remember the hysterical take-off Toyota did with that in the late 60s or early 70s? The announcer said they would strap John Cameron Swayze in the new Toyota to demonstrate how tough they were at high speed on bad roads. They strapped Swayze into the passenger seat and the test driver took off over hill and dale down rough and muddy roads. It was a very scary ride. At the end, a terrified and wide-eyed Swayze climbed out, and the announcer said those famous words:  John Cameron Swayze: he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I loved it. Jim Bell Retired in Lufkin

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1963, as TV host and actor Merv Griffin flies back to New York City with his wife Julann, he goes over notes for a new TV game show. Julann asks if he ponders one of the knowledge-based games that she likes. Merv says: Since ‘The $64,000 Question’, the network won’t let you do those anymore. She replies: Well, why don’t you give them the answers? And make people come up with the questions? Long time TV quiz show Jeopardy! is born.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KRCS DJ] (Marshall, TX) Subject: Remember. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Beverly Bremers [Don’t Say You Don’t Remember] Monday, March 10, 2014. Worry is largely a matter of thinking about things at the wrong time. I have built into your brain the amazing capacity to observe your own thoughts. So it is possible to monitor your thoughts and make choices about them.

To avoid wasting mental and emotional energy, timing is very important. If you think about certain things at the wrong time-for example, when you’re lying in bed-it’s all too easy to start worrying about them. This is why it’s so helpful to monitor your thinking. Instead of waiting until you’re deep in worry, you can interrupt anxious thoughts and change the subject.

I want you to discipline your mind to minimize worry and maximize worship. This will require much ongoing effort, but you’ll find that it is a path to freedom. When you realize you’re thinking about something at the wrong time-a worrisome thought at a time when you can do nothing about it-take swift action. Tell yourself, Not now! and direct your mind elsewhere. The best direction for your thinking is toward Me. Draw near Me by expressing your trust in Me, your love for Me. This is worship.

Then Jesus said to his disciples: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? -Luke 12:22-26

Worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water. -Revelation 14:7 nkjv
