For all who are following our work with Irene, the 15 year-old runner who lives in a White squatter camp near Pretoria, South Africa, here’s the news:
On my last trip I went to a school regional track meet where Irene ran in both the 800m and the 1500m races. She won Gold in both. I also discovered that she runs barefoot, as do most of the children, because they can’t afford shoes. The shoes we made for Irene were customized since she has no toes. They were stolen within days by a drug addict in the camp. He sold them so we can’t get them back even though we know who he is. So now she runs with no shoes.
This is where Irene lives. They eat when there is food. They bathe where there is water. But they praise God everyday for what He has given them.
I was told that Irene’s time in the 1500m was 4:48. The world record for 15-year-olds is 4:00. She is doing very well.
I also found out that she is in a Special Ed school. I don’t believe this has anything to do with her abilities. I think that as a result of the trauma in her life, which we are still investigating, she simply cannot cope with regular classes and in South Africa, the solution is to send all these students, regardless of the real issues, to Special Ed schools. Unfortunately, this turns out to be baby-sitting, not education. So, one more issue that we must address with Irene.
Please pray for her. We are doing what we can, thanks to many of you, but the problems are much deeper than we thought.
When Irene was a child, boiling water spilled on her feet. She lost most of her toes.
For everyone who is following the story about Irene, please read.
1. I will be back in South Africa in about 10 days. I am planning to see Irene and her family and do more interviews and video
2. IF YOU MADE ANY CONTRIBUTION toward Irene’s needs, PLEASE SEND ME A SMALL PICTURE OF YOURSELF so that I can show your face to Irene and she will know who it is that has blessed her. Just send the photo to my email address (with name please). email@example.com DO IT RIGHT AWAY.
3. Irene has had pneumonia, not uncommon for her living conditions, but dangerous at 14 years old. She seems to have recovered after much prayer, etc. but please keep her in your prayers. I have also learned that as a child she suffered damage to her rib-cage and needs now some support equipment. It is amazing that she is such an athlete. So I will investigate this when I get there.
4. Irene won 2 gold medals on November 2 in spite of the above. At God’s Table provided her with the registration support. THANKS
I will give all of you a full report after I see her.
Thank you so much for your compassion.
9 people now have made contributions to Irene’s running. One person is following up on some other help and one couple even asked about how to get Irene and her family to the USA.
In total, we raised more than $2000 for Irene.
This will go into the At God’s Table bank account in South Africa and be used to sponsor Irene’s entry fees into races.
THANK YOU! There is hardly anything more satisfying in the world than being the hands and feet of YHWH.
But Irene didn’t quit. Now Irene runs – fast and far. She is a champion long distance runner from a place that no one wants to admit even exists in a world where she is a complete outsider.
Each time that Irene runs, people notice. Each time she wins, she moves just a bit further away from the victimized life of the camps. Irene is running away from her poverty one race at a time until someone finally sees that she is a winner, an over-comer, a young girl who needs to be given a better opportunity to succeed.
Irene needs sponsors to enter these events. The government provides nothing, not even school assistance. But we can help Irene. Will you join with the rest of the community to become a sponsor of a poor white girl in the midst of a racially motivated government?
About 2 weeks ago I started coughing a little more than normal but thought I had just gotten a bug as us smokers cough some anyway. The coughing continued to get worse so I finally decided when I couldn’t hardly breathe anymore to go to the ER. They informed me: “You are having trouble breathing because you have pneumonia”.
They then wrote me some scripts for antibiotics and sent me on my way. All seemed to be getting better. However after a week I starting coughing again and couldn’t stop, then I heard something in my chest make a loud pop.
By the next night I was really having trouble breathing again, so I went back to the ER explaining my situation again. The next thing I know I am being wheeled into intensive care, where I remained for a day and a half. After some x-rays the Doctors came to me and asked “have you been in a car wreck”? “Did you get into a fight and did someone hit you in the chest or ribs?” Naturally I denied all these charges as they weren’t the truth.
I kept telling them about the persistent coughing and they finally agreed that although very unusual I had a fractured rib and because of the coughing the rib had punctured a lung and that the fluid in my lungs was blood. They then inserted a tube, about 7 inches long into my lung. As one might imagine this was very uncomfortable. So for several days I watched a machine pump blood out of me.
They have assured me after a multitude of tests I have no signs of cancer. And although still very sore I will recover from this.
I remember laying in the Hospital saying to myself: Lord please don’t let me die yet, I’ve still got to close that song deal with the movie production company. I know I can’t take any money with me but I could sure as heck leave some behind.

MAUDE FRICKERT TAKES A BREAK One of America’s most groundbreaking improv comics, Jonathan Winters, dies at 87 on Thursday evening, April 11, 2013 in his home in Montecito, CA. Jonathan’s rubber-face is a grab bag of eccentric personalities and facial expressions that inspires generations of comics. Winters uses facial contortions, sound effects, plus tall tales to get laughs. Probably his most famous Main Street character is sweet-seeming grandmother Maude Frickert who has a barbed tongue and a roving eye. In 1988 Jonathan tells U.S. News & World Report: As a kid, I always wanted to be lots of things. I wanted to be in the French Foreign Legion, a detective, a doctor, a test pilot with a scarf, a fisherman who hauled in a tremendous marlin after a 12-hour fight.

REASON WHY CABLE TV BILLS SO HIGH Ever wonder what causes our cable TV bills to be so expensive? Can it be the high tech coaxial transmission lines? Is it the friendly cable TV roustabouts who install and repair those lines? The Philly Post may have a solution as to why our cable TV bills are so high. The fourth estate rag lists what Philadelphia’s most beloved corporate overlords take home last year. In 2012, Brian Roberts, Comcast CEO receives $29 million which is up 8% from 2011. Steve Burke, NBCUniversal/Kabletown CEO corrals $26.3 million which is up 11.3%. David L. Cohen, Comcast Executive VP grabs $15.9 million which is up 5%. Does your 2013 cost of living increase percentage come near those of those cable TV honchos? Do you even receive a cost of living increase for 2013?

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Thanks for the info on Celeste. Weetzie often came by when we were doing our recording sessions. Too bad she died so young. One of my mentors to get me in with Celeste was a great character actor named Will Wright. He and his wife, Nell, took me into their home after I was critically injured in a horse accident. They nursed me back to health. Jimmy Wakeley offered to do it but CBS doctors said I had to be isolated and Jimmy had a 13-year old and a 17 year old. Will took me on several movie locations and I got to know Dale Robertson pretty well since he was from OKC. GD (www.garydnews.com)

DUKE GILLELAND (Belton, TX) Subject: New KTON In Temple… Jim, In my world the biggest example of the call letter changing was KVOO in Tulsa! LOTS of Western Swing music history lost there went the change was made! Sad state of affairs. We can have a cat 4 tornado in Bell county today and when you turn on the local radio for info, all you gonna hear is rush limberger! Duke
BOB WILLS – Today, music for the most part vacates AM radio for FM but now Talk radio moves from AM radio over to FM while listeners find their music on satellite radio plus new devices such as iPods. In the 1930s and 1940s, Bob Wills Western swing music is tops in TX all the way up to Tulsa, OK. Take me back to Tulsa where Bob Wills is still the king! During the Depression, Bob Wills Western swing music is so huge in popularity that he books 3 shows each night. In 1934, Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys begin to broadcast noontime shows on 50,000 watt KVOO-1170 in Tulsa, OK. At midnight, May 15, 2002 legendary Country KVOO-1170 signs off after over 75 years to become News-Talk KFAQ-1170. It’s so sad that in his last days, Bob Wills is bed ridden in poor health. In 1969, I co-host a Bob Wills benefit dance at my dear friend Bobbie Barker’s Farmer’s Daughter in San Antonio, TX. The place is jam packed with fans from all walks of life.
JOAN PATE-DAY [late KLIF-1190 mobile news reporter Sam Pate’s sister] (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: Wire recorders. It was early fifties. Looked like one of those old portable record players. It had two reels on it. And the reels had wires. Used a stand microphone and as the reel turned, it was recorded on the other one. My mama won it on a television show called Welcome Travelers’ which was in Chicago. They would find out from family members what the person always wanted but could not afford and that was their prize. It was a show about common folks who had done outstanding things. mama won recorder and an electric vibraharp because she had taught over 350 children to play different musical instruments free of charge. Which is why I play so many instruments.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Chubby Checker born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941 in Spring Gulley, SC gains fame with his 1960 #1 hit record The Twist. This starts the worldwide Twist dance craze. In 1963, Chubby Checker writes his #12 hit song Loddy Lo about Miss World, Catharina Lodders, who wins the title a year earlier. In 1964, Chubby Checker and Catharina Lodders are wed.

Heaven is both present and future. As you walk along your life-path holding My hand, you are already in touch with the essence of heaven: nearness to Me. You can also find many hints of heaven along your pathway, because the earth is radiantly alive with My Presence. Shimmering sunshine awakens your heart, gently reminding you of My brilliant Light. Birds and flowers, trees and skies evoke praises to My holy Name. Keep your eyes and ears fully open as you journey with Me.
At the end of your life-path is an entrance to heaven. Only I know when you will reach that destination, but I am preparing you for it each step of the way. The absolute certainty of your heavenly home gives you Peace and Joy, to help you along your journey. You know that you will reach your home in My perfect timing: not one moment too soon or too late. Let the hope of heaven encourage you, as you walk along the path of Life with Me.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. —1 Corinthians 15:20–23
It is hard to explain how happy I am to be arriving in Johannesburg on Tuesday. I will begin a month-long trip to present some live Sales Training seminars, to start setting up office again (in Cape Town) and to meet with a whole bunch of wonderful people.
Having a portable/Internet business is one thing because it allows you to live pretty much anywhere. This is great in concept. The reality, especially with small children, is very different. (Tim Ferriss made us all frothy at the thought of all this freedom with his book The 4-Hour Workweek. We were too excited to notice that he was single.)
Most of the expats I speak to share the same concerns. It is easy to think that England might be similar to South Africa, especially since they too seem to speak English. But it is miles away from SA culturally and socially. And for those of us who think of ourselves as entrepreneurs, it means learning a whole bunch of new ways of doing business. We usually do this via the time-honoured method of making staggeringly expensive mistakes.
I am convinced that the fastest way to have £1million in a bank in England is to arrive a month earlier with £2million. Although, given the words of the fellow in charge of EU finances, it is a lot better to have no more than €100,000 because otherwise you stand a solid chance of being forced to help your bank pay its bills.
In other words, while South Africans huff and grump about how bad things have become, the rest of the world has been gently teetering on the edge of a very deep longdrop which that young dude with the weird haircut in North Korea is theatening to vaporise soon.
In some ways SA reminds me of the that old sales story about the two shoe salesmen despatched to darkest Africa to check out the market.
The first sends a telegram back which reads, “No opportunity here. Nobody wears shoes.”
The second sends back a telegram which says, “Massive opportunity here. Nobody wears shoes yet.”
So, I relish coming back. Just as you should relish not leaving.
In the past week I have had one SA client pop out a marketing email (the day after a very enthusiastic sales webinar) and garner 10 sales on the first day. And another told me he was going offshore for a while because the free website process we showed him last year (and which he launched in January) had just put R250,000 into his offshore (non-Cypriot) bank for his first three months of trading. (He is a wonderful fellow but not very technical.) Opportunity abounds.
If you are finding it tough, then may I gently ask you to consider joining Businesss Warriors. In amongst all the videos and the forum, the brightest light at the moment is a daily email that in four days has started to transform the way Warriors look at, and do their selling and marketing. Check us out here.
All the best
