Florine Magness, one of our prayer lines greatest supporters, has asked for our prayers and prayer lines. Please keep me in your prayers. I just got home from the hospital. I had a stroke at 3 a.m. On Thursday morning. Lost the use of my left hand and arm. However, the Lord has seen fit to restore it and with some therapy, It should be back to normal in a few weeks. My sister in law, Nina, said she didn’t know how I was going to play the piano at church with one hand…. Pray for me. Florine

Hi Marty: Please put my granddaughter on your prayer line. Need a miracle. God Bless – Ann Brown

TRADE PUBLICATION AXE FALLS A round of editorial layoffs looms at Variety. In 2009, Variety lays off reporter Jeff Sneider. He heads across the street to rival publication The Wrap. In 2011, Jeff returns to Variety as a film reporter. On Tuesday, January 29, 2013 Variety relieves Jeff Sneider of his duties. On Tuesday afternoon Sneider Tweets: Sad to say, today is my last day at Variety. Thx to all my wonderful colleagues & the best group of film reporters on the planet. Farewell. Jeff also Tweets that he will consider other journalism offers but is also open to a career change. A source tells JRRR that Variety dismisses Jeff after he loses a scoop to Hollywood Reporter editor-at-large Kim Masters. Another source says Variety fires him because of what he says in a Tweet.

CHINA HACKS NEW YORK TIMES This past week a demon hacks JRRR’s email address. This throws our ISP and Web server into chaos mode and we panic for days. Well, for the past four months, Chinese hackers attack The New York Times. The beasts infiltrate its computer systems and steal its reporter and other employee passwords. The Times computer security experts track the intruders and study their movements to erect better defenses to block them. Ironically, the timing of the attacks coincides with a Times investigation report that publishes online on October 25, 2012 that exposes relatives of China’s prime minister, Wen Jiabao, accumulates a fortune worth several billion dollars through business dealings.

BILL CONWAY [previous PD KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) Subject: Trivia error. Jim Love your stuff but I have to correct your trivia question about the first team to score 50 points in a Super Bowl. It was not my beloved Cowboys in 1993. It was the San Francisco 49ers in XXIV in 1990. They beat Denver 55-10. I was at that game in the Super Dome. I was PD of KRPM and was escorting listeners who won a contest sponsored by Phillips Milk of Magnesia. They had to guess what was the most popular thing to do during halftime of the Super Bowl. It was flushing the toilet. We also gave them T Shirts saying “I flushed at the Super Bowl” Bill Conway

JIM GOUGH [‘Mr. Texas’-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1148) November 19, 2012 [Monday] Saw your mention of “Larry’s Country Diner” in your last newsletter. I watch it every week as it reminds me of the great old Grand Ol Opry shows of bygone years. It’s a refreshing relief from the phony crap that network television calls ‘entertainment’. Goes to show that wholesome programs can still make it. Cheers to Larry (Black) and his crew…may they continue for a long time! Jim Gough

ROBERT MILLER [Bob] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1169) February 01, 2013 [Friday] Hi Jim, The other day I wrote to you regarding George “Super” Cooper doing an American Bandstand show. After doing more research it turns out that the KONO jock was Ed Dunn. For the life of me I thought it was Cooper but it’s been a long time. The only slip was when he was talking about the Battle of the Alamo and reversed the date to 1863 instead of 1836. Here is a link to the story in Billboard Magazine.’s+George+Cooper+does+a+guest+appearance+on+American+Bandstand&source=bl&ots=k7zYs9g249&sig=LjQe7FakpGXhi1k3u5OsflDQ3wE&hl=en&sa=X&ei=l28KUZGAMe-62gXJh4HgDA&ved=0CDkQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=KONO’s%20George%20Cooper%20does%20a%20guest%20appearance%20on%20American%20Bandstand&f=false All the best! TRIVIA ANSWER: When Dr. Hook releases their single The Cover Of The Rolling Stone, the Rolling Stone magazine sells more copies in the following two weeks than it does any other time in its history.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Subject: Doug Brown, KTRK KWTX KBTX. Doug was born and grew up in the Central Texas city of Brady. Doug Brown I watched in the early 1960’s on KWTX 10 in Waco and KBTX 3 in Bryan. We lived on the Cameron Highway northwest of Hearne. One afternoon my Mom yells out the door to my Dad saying “Doug Brown says a storm is coming”. I felt like Doug Brown is part of our family right then. Seeing how happy Doug is on Television and to hear Doug do his mid day music show on KWTX AM in Waco I said I want to be like that and I can do this. When I landed on KNEL 1490 and KIXV in Brady 1993 I called Doug and recorded a phone interview with him as KNEL 1490 in Brady is where Doug was I believe was first on the air and born in Brady Texas. Petes Weekly: Frying pans and fires…

Frying pans and fires…

In 2006 all six of my Internet connections in Durban failed. And then I made the worst decision of my life. In a huff I chose to sort the problem out by leaving Durban (almost reasonable) and heading for Hampshire (utterly silly). Talk about hopping out of the frying pan.Seven years and two countries after leaving Durban I am happy to admit that leaving was a very bad choice. Living as an expat has given me a lot of time to reflect on the real value of South Africa for small business owners. Before I throw my hat into this ring, however, please accept that I understand the challenges. I know that SARS is as wild as Wyatt Earp at the OK corral. Try dealing with HMRC and you will long for the frying pan you rejected. I know that Home Affairs gets an E-minus most days. Try the UK Border Agency and explore a whole new alien world. In other words, this article is not to make light of your challenges, some of which are very interesting, as the Chinese might say. But do not throw the puppy out with the bathwater, yet.For an aspirant entrepreneur South Africa offers a few priceless benefits. Startups need a very, very optimistic owner. The root of all optimism is Vitamin D, also known as the happy vitamin. The sun offers it to each of us for free, and in SA that means an unlimited supply. Norway has a lot less sun, and a heck of a lot of very sombre people. Like the UK.Neither country is remotely entrepreneurial compared to SA.A key to startup survival is keeping initial costs low. That is very, very easy in SA compared to the UK or Norway. This means SA labour is very cheap compared to, say, the Norwegian effective minimum wage of about R38,000 per month. (No, it does not buy much.)This cheap labour allows SA business owners to invest a lot more time on their venture than a Brit or Norwegian. In Norway, once again, a few hours every day get lost in winter shovelling snow, which is like digging a hole for yourself and filling it up again so that you have something to do tomorrow. A report I read said that the average Norwegian man loses about 30 hours each week on life maintenance (car, home, gardening, roads, washing, …) In SA getting help is easy and does not cost a lot. Finally, I can boast about my cheap 50GB down/40GB up 4G internet as much as I want, but that isolates a single number from the vast swathe of other costs involved in living here so that I can get that access. (More to the point, I don’t need it, and I am a power user.)You have the same access to the world market that I have. You have the same access to a dollar or pound income. But your costs are much, much lower than mine, and almost anyone living in the UK or Northern Europe. You speak the same international business language – English. But you get to do it for three quarters of the year while sitting around the pool, also known as a melted-ice-rink on this side of the globe. Finally, I know that Norway is 1st or 2nd in every measurement of great places to live. But they do not measure how much sun there is, nor how happy the people are. And that is one of the many reasons I am coming home for a month. I need some of that happy vitamin stuff. And to meet people that talk as if they mean it.

All the best
Peter Carruthers

Emmylou Harris Charged in Hit-and-Run Accident

Emmylou Harris is facing formal criminal charges

stemming from a car accident in Los Angeles in October of 2012.

We reported in December that the legendary singer was under investigation for the accident, which took place at 10PM on Oct. 1. Harris was driving a rental car on L.A.’s 405 freeway when she reportedly struck another vehicle. The law requires the involved parties to stop and exchange information in an accident where there is property damage, but Harris instead drove away without stopping. The other driver subsequently filed a criminal complaint in Beverly Hills.

A representative for Harris called the incident a “minor traffic accident,” saying the singer “unintentionally rubbed bumpers” with the other car. The rep said Harris did not realize that contact was made, so she proceeded on her way, and also called the incident a “garden variety accident” that is common on the 405, saying that the 65-year-old singer had turned the matter over to her insurance agent.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday (Jan. 30) that Harris — who has won a dozen Grammy awards for her solo work and collaborations with artists such as Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Alison Krauss — has been charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run in the accident. No court date has been announced, and Harris’ publicist did not return the AP’s calls seeking comment on the matter.

Emmylou Harris is slated to release a new album in late February.
