With the arrival of established services like Spotify and iTunes in new markets, major music services are now open in 58 countries, compared to 23 one year ago.Digital music revenues grew by eight percent globally in 2011 to $5.2 billion – a faster rate than in 2010 – with digital download purchases up 17 percent. Globally 32 percent of industry revenues are now derived from digital, while in the United States digital returns surpassed physical in 2011. Despite this progress, the report also highlights the continued barrier that piracy poses to sustainable growth in the digital music market. IFPI and Nielsen estimate that one in four international Internet users (28 percent) regularly access unlicensed services.
